The Missing Piece in Your DEI Strategy: Why Size Inclusion Matters in the Workplace

I've asked company leaders, DEI professionals, and my LinkedIn network this a question:

“Have you ever sat through DEI training that mentioned size inclusion or anti-fat bias?”

The answer? A resounding no with a couple of “it was sorta very briefly mentioned but not really.”

Here's the thing - we're missing a massive piece of the inclusion puzzle. Fat employees face discrimination in hiring, promotion, and daily workplace interactions. They deal with chairs that don't fit, health insurance that doesn't cover their needs, and colleagues who feel entitled to comment on their lunch choices.

Yet somehow, weight bias rarely gets a mention in our diversity efforts.

Two actionable steps to change this:

→ Audit your current DEI materials - does size inclusion appear anywhere?

→ Include anti-fat bias in your next unconscious bias discussion

The disability community has taught us that medicalizing bodies often creates more harm than help. The same applies here. When we frame fatness as a health problem to solve, we perpetuate the very bias we should be addressing.

What would it look like if your workplace truly included people of all sizes?
